Google Summit: E-Portfolios

In this session E-Portfolios made Easy – presented By Anthony Speranza I was reminded of how important it is for students to keep an E-Portfoilio.

A few years ago I had read widely on E-portfolios and presented a workshop on student E-Portfolios at Marryatville High School in 20008. As with Anthony, my inspiration was Dr Helen Barrett and the connection between student E-Portfolios and deep learning. Anthony was lucky to have the experience of working with Dr Helen Barratt and Google. See this PowerPoint on her blog (click the image).

Why are E-Portfolios important?

Anthony gave us the example of Leonardo da Vinci’s Folio that changed the world. But how can E-Portfolios benefit students?

E-portfolios can be- interactive; evidence of learning can be stored and accessed. They give purpose and audience when choosing work for the E-Portfolio. For more information go to 41 Benefits of an E-Portfolio, by Karen Barnstable.

Vision and purpose.

Google Dive can be the digital archive of our life. Students can use Blogger, Sites and upload presentations, docs, YouTube and images.

Group Presentations on Class Site

One of Anthony’s ideas that I want to use on my class site is to have a Google presentation for students to share reflections. Each student puts an image of their work and writes a reflection on one slide. This would be good to do as a whole class reflection on that week’s learning projects.

Google Sites

  • Choose a template for their own Google Site or they can customise their own.
  • Pages could include: goals/ reflections/ announcements page for new posts or a blog post page.
  • Train students to manage their E-Portfolio

Suggestions for Pages

  1. Home
  2. About Me
  3. My goals
  4. Reflection journal
  5. Achievements
  6. Genius hour

In Anthony’s school the student E-Portfolios are private with only student and parent access but I like the idea of High Tech High where student, class and teacher E-Portfolios are open to the public as a way of demonstrating student achievement and promoting the school.
