Using the Internet & Skype to become better digital citizens

Year 9 Form are taking part in a Skype Interview with Ann Michaelsen’s students from Sandvika vgs High School in Norway.

Students will participate in a study program in Form for two lessons that will help further develop their Internet safety awareness and see ways to engage with others in a positive and responsible way. During the Skype Interview with Ann’s Norwegian students, students will be involved in conversations on Internet Safety and participate as responsible digital citizens.

This lesson and Skype activity form part of Wilderness School’s Positive Education model.

Positive Relationships
Increasing social and emotional skills in order to create and promote compassionate, kind, friendly and hospitable individuals who form and maintain healthy and fulfilling relationships.

These Skype interviews encompass Safer Internet Day (SID) and is supported by the Australia Safer Internet Day Committee – Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner.

The aim is to help guide children and young people toward safe, enjoyable experiences online, the Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner hopes to encourage behavioural change – where Australian children and young people act responsibly online – just as they would offline.

 Lesson 1

In class, students will start by watching the video below. This will be followed by the pair and group activities.

In pairs continue by taking this quiz.

As a warm up exercise students then open these two role cards and work in groups of two roleplaying.

Lesson 2

Watch the film Tagged  in groups of 3-4 consider and respond to the questions below:

  • What do you already know?
  • What information is new?
  • What would you like to know more about?

Prepare for the Skype interview with Norway. Write 5 questions to ask your global friends using the information that you have watched and read. Do you think that Norwegian students share similar experiences and concerns as yourself? How do they keep safe online?

Middle School Assembly Presentation

Use your findings from the video resources, the group work, and your Skype interview to create a presentation slide detailing your findings. Then with your Form organise your slides into a presentation, video or Sway for Middle School Assembly.
